Sick Child Policy
A. Each child shall be observed for contagious diseases and for other signs of illness on arrival and throughout the day.
B. Each child's parent(s) shall be notified immediately when any contagious disease occurs in the center.
C. Unusual behavior shall be monitored closely and parent(s) shall be contacted if the behavior continues or if other symptoms develop. These behaviors include, but shall not be limited to:
1. Is cranky or less active than usual;
2. Cries more than usual;
3. Feels general discomfort or seems unwell;
4. Has loss of appetite.
D. If children exhibit any of the following symptoms according to Missourt Department of Health's rules for inspected centers, they must be picked up to go home.
1. Diarrhea (more than one abnormally loose stool);
2. Vomiting
3. Child gets red or blue in the face or makes a high-pitched croupy or whooping sound after coughing;
4. Fever over 100 F under the arm
5. Labored or rapid breathing;
6. Yellowish skin or eyes;
7. Tears, redness of eyelid lining, irritation, followed by swelling and discharge of pus;
8. Headache and stiff neck;
9. Unusual spots and rashes
10. Sore throat or trouble swallowing
11. Infected areas of skin with crusty, bright yellow, dry or gummy areas;
12. Grey or white stools;
13. Severe itching of body or scalp or constant scratching of scalp;
14. Unusually dark, tea-colored urine;
15. A child is in the contagious period of a disease;
E. Children should be kept home if experiencing any of the above symptoms. Children may return when able to resume routine daily activities.
G. Notifiy the center if your child is ill.
H. Children must be kept home 24 hours after
1. Conjunctivitis treatment is started;
2. Antibiotic is started for strep throat;
3. Fever free from a temperature that was over 100 F with no fever reducing medicine.
MEDICATION
A medication authorization must be completed instructing child care personnel to administer medicine. Medication shall be in the original container, labeled with the child's name, instructions, including times and amounts for dosage, and the physician's name and date.
No medication including over the counter medication will be administered unless we have written permission from the pediatrician. All medications will be sent home daily.
